Collection of the artist, 1867 [lent by him to Paris 1867]. Possibly Durand-Ruel, 1867 [see catalogue of Albert Spencer sale, cited below]. Marmontel; his sale Hôtel Drouot, Paris, May 11–12, 1868, lot 36 as “Femmes des Ouled-Nayls (Sahara)” for 9,400 francs [price according to an annotated copy of the sale catalogue in the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague]. Edward Matthews, New York [see Spencer sale cited below]; sold to Albert Spencer, New York, by 1888; his sale Fifth Avenue Galleries, New York, February 28, 1888, lot 65 for $6,400 [price according to an annotated copy of the sale catalogue in the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague]. Henry Field (died 1890), Chicago; his widow Mrs. Florence Lathrop Field; given to the Art Institute, 1894.
