By gift c. 1931 from the artist to Léopold Marchand, Paris, husband of Micheline Posnafsky, the sitter on left; sold 1940/41 to Jean-Claude Bellier, Paris;[1] by whom sold 27 May 1959 to Chester Dale [1882-1962], New York; bequest 1963 to NGA.[2] [1]According to Bellier, picture was sold by Marchand immediately after his wife committed suicide, just before German occupation of Paris. [2]Letter dated 26 May 1959 from Jean-Claude Bellier also includes Roland Dreyfus, Paris, in the provenance. Date of acquisition by Mr. Dale according to Chester Dale papers in NGA curatorial records.
